The thrill of first learning — worlds around the words,
first talk, first read, first sound,
like tiny singing birds.
With my first book, my eyes are dazzled and amazed:
“Oh see, it’s an apple!”
“Look — a giraffe so tall!”
“Oh, the elephant’s trunk is there!”
Sweet little wonders, all.
The words grow big and heavier now,
yet lighter when we read;
growing from my bedtime tales
to teaching those in need.
Learn to learn,
listen to learn,
talk to learn,
walk to learn —
let me yearn to learn.
The more I read, the more I need.
The more I know, the more I crave.
Puzzle me till I understand;
don’t stop me when it rains.
Just stay around so I don’t live in vain.
Oh God, bless me to receive
the joy of Your Words
and enable me to feel Your Worlds.
