science and religion

Coherence between Science and Religion

Many of us believe that science and religion are enemies of each other.

But there is a Bahá’í principle that says science and religion should always be in harmony.

Before understanding their harmony, we should understand their meaning.

Science is an entity that provides us with facts and reasons,

and religion is an entity that provides us with spirituality, gives us values,

and most importantly, connects us to God.

Science, if it does not go with religion, can lead to destruction.

A person can do anything and call it an experiment.

And religion, if it does not stay with science, can lead to blind imitation.
There can be superstitions; there can be prejudices.

Therefore, it is very important for both to stay in harmony.

There are some theories in science, some laws.
If we don’t know those laws and theories, we don’t explain them to anyone.

But it is the opposite with religion.
Even if we don’t know anything, we still try to explain it,
which often leads to wrong interpretations.

Both science and religion are progressive.

How?

Just like science had some theories that were different 100 or 150 or 200 years ago,
today those theories are somewhat different.

But it doesn’t mean that those earlier theories were wrong.
They were perfect theories according to their time,
and today’s theories are built on their foundation.

And the same goes with religion.
Past religions were brought by the Manifestations of God.
The values they provided are not wrong today;
they were perfect according to the time period.

And today we need different values (laws),
so present values are built on the basis of past values.

Religious truths.

We say that science and religion work in different directions.
But if we are working in different directions,
only then can we cover all directions.

For example, talking about the equality of men and women—
we know that a woman’s nature is different.
She gives birth to a child; a man cannot.
But that doesn’t mean we don’t talk about equality.

Similarly with religion and science—
they go in somewhat different directions,
but when we talk about harmony,
only then can civilization progress.

And we can see that we are not moving along with them,
because of which we see destruction.
We see destruction on the side of religion as well,
and we see destruction on the side of science too.

If we do not move forward with both science and religion,
we will always see destruction.

And whatever religious truths or religious understandings there are,
whatever original holy writings there are,
we can never fully accomplish them
if we do not understand science and religion correctly.
